Lakers is a social and recreational club that connects people.
At Lakers we encourage people with an intellectual disability to come out of their shell and make friends through a number of sports, art, drama, education cookery and social activities. These friendships build courage to try new things and help our members to progress and enjoy their abilities.
To our members Lakers and this friendship is life changing, whether it be, or showing someone your first ever painting, every moment is cherished and shared. The members and families that come to us celebrate successes together and support each other in tough times.
A Story of Friendship
In 1994 I had 2 young children under 6. I was desperate to connect with other parents who had a child with special needs, but there weren’t many options available. I felt so alone. I was worried too Ciara was shy and didn’t have many friends or things to do outside of school. I heard about the Lakers club in Bray and as a parent I thought, wow this could be great if Ciara made JUST 1 FRIEND
Ciara was shy at first and it took a long time, but she began to really enjoy going to meet her new friends Derri and Sara. 26 years later, there is no stopping Ciara -she goes to cookery, drama, bocce, ladies keep fit, gym and boxercise, is far more independent and is so popular. Ciara loves Lakers, “it’s fun, I see my friends, I do lots of activities, I love it” she beams
What worries us is the members and families we haven’t reached yet. We have long waiting lists (120 people) and a need for more activities. We have to charge a small fee of €3.50 to €5 per class, but there are members who cannot afford this, and families who cannot bring their kids to Lakers
Help us to reach out to more people who are isolated and need support.
