Our Impact“We are beyond lucky to have this inclusive, activity packed, club on our doorstep! It gives my son a place to hang out with his friends, take part in sports and learn new skills. WE LOVE LAKERS! ❤️”
“Matthew joined Lakers for a second time aged 11 after a few very harrowing years, I have seen him blossom into a fine young man, very happy with his mates in Lakers. He really enjoys his activities, be it Athletics, Swimming, Drama and the social side in Drop-In. The Disco’s are another highlight!”
“Volunteering at Lakers is rewarding and fun. We have the best craic and I love seeing the members grow and develop into the wonderful people they are. Lakers brings out the best in everyone. In the Lakers community we’re all a family, we all love and respect each other and I’m glad to be a part of it. It is a home away from home and I couldn’t ask for anything better.”
“I enjoy volunteering with Lakers because it’s something different to do with my spare time, and it never fails to put a smile on my face. The members and all the other volunteers are incredible people and I love spending time with them, it’s fun for me as well as for the members.”
“Lakers to me is a wonderful community of growth, encouragement and positivity. Lakers is such a huge part of the heart of Bray and I have always wanted to show my support. Lakers brings out the very best in each individual member, supporting and inspiring them to reach their full potential. Members are full of life and love, and each day is more rewarding then the last. The laughs, smiles and absolute craic we have is contagious!!”
“I really enjoy volunteering for Lakers firstly because Lakers is one big family. Lakers is so welcoming to staff, volunteers, members and their families. To see the difference Lakers brings to an individual person’s life in terms of confidence and inclusion makes volunteering so enjoyable. To be a volunteer means being involved in the community and supporting individuals with intellectual disabilities whilst experiencing the fun and enjoyment that being in Lakers brings.”
“Lakers provides me with an opportunity to volunteer in a warm and welcoming environment. It provides an opportunity to help others develop skills while also developing your own. It allows me to gain valuable experience working with members, volunteers and staff in an engaging and inviting atmosphere. You are made to feel as an important part of the club and that your volunteering is greatly appreciated.”
“I started volunteering at Bray Lakers just over 2 years ago when I asked them if they would be interested in an Adaptive TaeKwon-Do class. 2 years on I’m amazed at how much the class has grown. We now have 22 members training twice a week. So what do I get from volunteering? I get to see our members grow in mental and physical strength. I see them grow in confidence. I see them work hard to earn the medals and trophies they’ve won.”
“As a volunteer for Lakers I get to see the other side of the fence that is volunteers who have for years given up their time so that my daughter can enjoy her club with her peers and friends. By giving only an hour or so here, I am there to witness the giggles, very strong opinions on music choices and the glint in the eye for a decent tune. I have seen respect, fun and great kindness shown which gives me a glimpse of what can be achieved when a positive approach is fostered.”
“Lakers was the first place I felt I didn’t need to explain my son or ask people to accommodate him. He was welcomed with open arms and accepted for who he is. I have no doubt that he would not be the rounded, sociable person he is today without Lakers and his friends there. He has formed bonds for life that will take him into adulthood with a support group and true friendship.”
“Lakers means a lot to Gary and family. They have built up his confidence from a shy to an outgoing, confident person. A thank you to Sandra, who has been there for Gary from the day he started and always looks out for him. Thanks to all the staff, volunteers past and present.”
